So there's been some talk that maybe we should advertise our website a little bit and see if we can draw in some new people. There are a few ways to do this, and I've looked into the MySpace MyAds program where I can promote the site with a targeted audience and get started for $25. It's a cheap way to spread the word, but I want to make sure we're open to inviting new people to check out our site and I want your input as to whether advertising on MySpace is the right way to go with this.
What are your thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?

That is pretty interesting. I am willing to put $25 into the kitty. Do you have a paypal account, HCA?
I must say that I am rather curious as to whether we could pull people from MySpace. My only concern (and I have talked about this already) is whether or not, our name will bias people before they check us out.
Either way, I think it is worth at least an initial try. What's the worst that can happen?

No paypal, but I'd be happy to spring for it once if the general consensus is "go for it"

I think it is definitely worth a try.
What does the $25 get us? How many ads? How long do they run?
I'd also be more than willing to shell out $25 to see if this drums up any interest. But you can't just put ads out there one time and see if the site springs to life. There has to be a set period of time devoted to testing ads. Sometimes ads take a while to take effect, and at least a three month period is needed. I'd say closer to six months to really make a difference.
Additionally, we can't just put ads out there, and then sit back and expect the site to start hopping. We would need the people here to commit to posting more. People won't want to join, or stick around, a site that barely has new posts. So to suck people in (and keep them here), we need to appear to be a living, lively site. Once we get more people, we all won't have to post so often. But in the meantime, it means posting pretty much all the time. You had a silly thought during the day? Write it down and then post it when you get home. Made a super spectacular dish for dinner? Post the recipe. Maybe a picture too if your camera is handy. If we treat the site like it is the first place we go to when we have something to say, so will others.

I thought the consensus before was that we didn't WANT the myspace crowd in here?

Okay alright here's what I need to move forward.
I can put together something with the myspace MyAds program where we get as many impressions as it takes to get $25 in click throughs @ .25 per click thru. I feel that's a start. But if we're going to advertise elsewhere, I'm gonna need your help.
1) We need ads that look the same wherever we post them - hence the Buttons section in the Images forum.
2) If you think we should advertise at a webcomic or someplace else cool and you want to contribute, post here with the name of the webcomic and/or what you're willing to pitch in to advertise there.
So far, 2 of you have been willing to pony up $25 with me. Who else is interested? It's gonna take more than $75 to spread the word effectively.

Anyone consider Something*Positive again, since that drove the initial mass signups?
Looks like Randy's operating through Project Wonderful now, and current bid is $8/day.
Some "long tail" search terms could get on Google AdWords for 1-5ยข/click, too.
Anyone check Facebook's rates? A lot of people are migrating over there now since MySpace got so spammy.

I'd love to run a Proj Wonderful ad there at Something Positive... we've just got to come up with a banner ad.
Anyone with design talent wish to make up one or three for us?
